For upgrading many legacy Mac's and MacBooks, a very affordable off-the-shelf 2.5' laptop-size 6Gbps SATA III SSD is the right choice. When used with a 2.5' to 3.5' drive adapter, sled, or tray it's also the right choice for older Mac Pro towers and iMac computers which used full-size 3.5 inch drives. They're also ideal for building a DIY external SSD Macintosh backup drive with a low-cost USB or Thunderbolt enclosure.- LaCie 2TB Mobile SSD High‑Performance External SSD USB-C USB 3.0 - Next Gallery Image; Only at Apple. Mac Compatible SATA & NVMe PCIe SSD Blades
For upgrades inside your Mac, you need CUSTOM PINOUT Apple compatible SSD modules. Companies like OWC, Fledging, MCE Technologies, and Dataram make Mac-specific SSD blades appropriate for your particular model/year of Macintosh laptop or desktop. For 2013-2016 Macs

For Apple users with modern Thunderbolt 3 equipped Macs, you can build your own SSD backup drive using standard pinout ultra-fast NVMe PCIe SSD modules and either a very affordable 10Gbps USB 3.1 Gen2 USB-C enclosure or a costlier 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3 drive case designed to hold standard M.2 form-factor solid-state modules. We reccomend the Western Digital Black or a Crucial P1 Series SSD blade.
Enclosure For M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD Blades
MacBook Compatible SSD's
From the original white MacBooks and early MacBook Pro's through around 2012, a standard 2.5' SATA SSD was generally an easy upgrade. As with other Mac's, solid-state modules supplanted standard drive form factors, first with custom M.2 SATA and then as by 2014, custom pinout PCIe NVME SSD modules. Adapters are available to convert a standard M.2 SSD blade to Apple's custom pinouts if needed, but it's best to buy direct replacements from OWC, Transcend, or Fledging who make Apple compatible modules.May Be SATA or PCIe Modules Depending On Model
The compatible MacBook Air SDD timeline is most complex. As the 1st Macs to feature solid-state storage, it has transitioned from 1.8' ATA-IDE to 1.8' SATA I, then II, then III, then onto custom-pinout M.2 SATA modules, to the more recent M.2 PCIe modules.
iMac Compatible SSD's
White Plastic iMac's - both G5 and Intel used full-size 3.5' SATA interface drives. Thick bodied Aluminum iMac's used full-size SATA drives as well. However with the ultra-Slim Aluminum iMac, Apple moved towards 2.5' laptop size SATA hard drives with (optionally) a custom SATA SSD module. We recommend complete iMac drive upgrade kits specific to your model with the proper tools and other things needed to safely complete the drive swap.Complete SSD Drive Swap Kits
Mac mini Compatible SSD's
For Intel CPU based Mac minis, a 2.5 inch SATA SSD is generally the right choice, for older G4 Mac mini's you want an IDE-ATA interface 2.5' laptop size drive for upgrading.Mac Pro Compatible SSD's
The Mac Pro cylinder models use a custom pinout PCIe SSD module. There aren't many aftermarket Apple compatible SSD upgrade options. OWC/MacSales is your best bet, followed by MCE which supplies larger, factory original Apple PCIe modules in larger capacities than your Mac Pro came with. The Aluminum Mac Pro Towers offer two solid-state drive upgrade options. One is to use a readily available drive tray/adapter to convert an off the shelf SATA SSD to 3.5' drive bay. Another option is the use of a PCIe SSD card in one of the slots which can typicially support either 1 or 2 2.5' SATA SSD drives, or more recent ones that support M.2 SATA or even PCIe SSD modules.
Mac Compatible ATA-IDE SSD's
Lacie Ssd Upgrade Guide
Even for much older G3 and G4 Macintosh models there are a few 2.5' IDE solid-state drives that can be a drop-in replacement for legacy Mac Mini and iBooks. With an adapter, some can be retrofitted to tuck an IDE SSD into an iMac or other full-size Macintosh 3.5' drive bay common at the time.Disclosure: As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
SSD's And Apple Compatibility
Regardless of it's form factor, an SSD drive or module is a platform agnostic device. When formatted for the proper operating system, be it MacOS, Windows, Linux or other OS, it will perform as optimally as it can. Apple owners will most likely need to reformat a new SSD to the proper GUID or Extended formatting and partitioning depending on your Mac model and version of OSX.Top Mac Compatible Internal SSD Manufacturers
Notable companies who make Apple compatible internal SSD blades, modules and drives start with Samsung as the performance leader of the pack. Other venerable solid-state flash memory brands of note include Toshiba / OCZ, SanDisk, AData, Silicon Power, Transcend International, WD-Western Digital and Patriot.Mac Compatible External SSD Drive Companies

LaCie´s new storage options as top-in-class performance and docking for cinema workflows
With the 1big Dock SSD Pro and the 1big Dock, LaCie’s storage experts have introduced two new storage solutions. According to the company, the two new products are aimed at creative professionals and prosumers.
Designed by Neil Poulton, the LaCie 1big Dock SSD Pro (2 TB and 4 TB SSD capacities) and 1big Dock (4 TB, 8 TB, and 16 TB HDD capacities) add to LaCie's line of versatile data storage systems built for visual content creators.
Pros
- Solid sequential performance for 6K or 8K production
- Sleek aesthetics
- Free data recovery service during the warranty period
- One cable to rule them all (serves as dock station)
Cons
- Price tag (it might cost more than your computer)
- SSD is limited to 4TB, while HHD goes up to 16TB
Verdict
LaCie’s 1big Dock Pro and 1big Dock are a high capacity workhorse as external hard-drives. Creative pros can purchase both options in confidence knowing they feature an enterprise-class drive and comes backed by a five-year warranty and data recovery coverage. While it is pricey for the average consumer, it is quite the bang for the buck for prosumers. If you think that the priciest option gives too much power, well, the photography market is going into that direction and the 61MP-monster from Sony a7R IV or the Canon EOS R5 are just some hints of why more powerful drivers are needed and the investment is worth it. Or do you want to have fun filming and waiting centuries while it renders?
Who is the target audience?
- 1big Dock Pro: Filmmakers and DITs in the trenches of 6K or 8K video production. This is ideal, super slow motion, uncompressed video, and VFX content.
- 1big Dock: Content visual creators that not necessarily need an SSD solution and who are looking for a more affordable option.
1big Dock Pro: A perfect solution for cinematographers
With the 1big Dock Pro, LaCie is clearly targeting users who need a powerful SSD. Especially for particularlys a big plus.
What´s the reasoning behind these two devices?
When it comes to storage media, the idea behind it´s pretty simple. At a basic level, there’s a choice between HDDs and SSDs and single drives. These are then connected up to our computers and they’re ready to store or back up any of the files we deal with.
Not only do the 1big Dock systems give you extra connectivity, but they also free up the existing ports on your machine, keeping your desktop tidier and free from messy cables.
But when it comes to getting the very best performance out of a storage system in a world that now requires us to work with video files upwards of 6K or 8K in resolution, the humble storage system needs to become so much more than just a place for files.
A bittersweet taste
You get what you pay for, that´s for sure. The 1big Dock Pro seems like a dream come true to cinematographers, but if you are one of them, be ready to open your wallet and pay $2,501.00 (2,849 Euros) for the most complete option with a memory of 4TB. Of course, you can choose the less expensive version without SSD, but with an HDD drive and with a storage capacity of 4TB for $354.00 (399 Euros). Linux mint pendrive bootavel.
How do I integrate LaCie´s solutions into my workflow?
As a documentary photographer, on an assignment that lasts 1-2 weeks, I shoot an average of 10,000 pictures or more (and I know that the number could be low compared to other photographers). This means that I have an increasing need for having quality memory solutions to store, backup, and edit a big amount of information in a safe way.
After photographing, I always do a minimum of two backups of all the images I have taken in external hard drives that I keep in separate places to minimize the risk of losing them at once. As soon as I´m back at home, I transfer all my content into my desktop hard drive that I use as the main core of my workflow.
In LaCie, I have found the perfect balance between spiffy-looking, pocket-size mega-storage, and extreme-robust portable drives. Are they perfect? No one is, but so far these devices have withstood constant hustle and bustle without any complaints.
If you are a cinematographer that demands high-data solutions, for sure you are going to appreciate much more the capabilities of the 1big Dock and the 1big Dock SSD Pro to store and edit your 8K videos.
Final thoughts
It seems that 8K is approaching faster than we could imagine, and we should prepare for it. But shooting in 8K does not mean only that we have to upgrade our cameras. Our whole workflow needs to get nice lifting as well. That includes our cards, our editing stations, and, last but not least, our hard drives.
I don´t even have an 8K TV, however, for me, it is clear that as we move forward and video files become ever larger, our storage systems need to keep pace both in terms of speed and when it comes to media management. With a choice between the 1big Dock and the 1big Dock SSD Pro, users now have a media hub storage solution to suit a wide range of budgets as well as being ready for the new generation of 8K-capable devices.
